420

Ages 13-17

NEW OPTIONS!!
We have added a FLEX 7 of 8 weeks option at a lower price to allow families to skip the week of their choice for a family vacation.

420 Fundamentals
420 Fundamentals is for sailors moving out of Opti Race and into double-handed sailing. It is also a good option for high school sailors joining WSA for the first time, have some sailing experience and are interested in racing. Students work as a team to develop and advance boat handling skills and racing techniques. Students will also be introduced to sailing with a spinnaker and using the trapeze. This program will have an emphasis on improving sailing skills for racing as well as racing prowess.
As students become more comfortable in the 420, they will have opportunities to participate in NBYA 420 Regattas with the goal of participating in the Wickford 420 regatta at the end of the season.

420 Race
This class is for sailors moving out of 420 fundamentals or who are experienced high school sailors looking to improve their overall skills.. Having a good understanding of the fundamentals of 420 sailing and racing, students will now work on more advanced skills and fine details of making the boat sail at its best. Additionally, the class focuses on advanced boat handling, racing techniques and tactics. This program will have an emphasis on improving racing skills with the goal of improving regatta results.
Students in the 420 Race Class are encouraged to participate in all the local NBYA 420 Regattas as well as Junior Race Week.

  • The 420-Racing students will be offered the opportunity to compete in various NBYA 420 Regattas throughout the summer. Most are 2-day events within the week and will take the place of the normal classes. Participation is strongly encouraged.
  • The 420-Fundamentals students will have the opportunity to compete as they become more comfortable in the boats with the ultimate goal of participating in the Wickford Regatta at the end of the season.
  • NBYA Junior Race Week is a 3-day event being held this year in July at Sail Newport. WSA plans on sending both 420 and Opti teams.
  • Note that regattas may be on different days of the week rather than the regular class day. This may cause a shift in the regular class day schedule as race days take the place of class days.
  • Sailors choosing not to participate in a regatta will be allowed to join other WSA classes on their regularly scheduled class days.
